Psychology
What
exactly is sports psychology? Essentially sports psychology
is the study of how an athlete can reach his or her potential
through the use of focus and visualization.
Some athletes describe this state of hyper focus as "being
in the zone." Essentially when an athlete is this focused,
we as sports psychologists, describe that athlete as having reached
his or her peak performance level.
Basketball players who are "in the zone" describe the
rim as seeming to be twice its regular diameter. Baseball players
feel that the ball is as "big as a grapefruit" and golfers
have stated that they feel they are "one with their environment."
As a specialist in sports psychology, I work with athletes of
all levels-from high school to the professional ranks.
Initially I will evaluate the athlete and see what his or her
goals are and how they have worked to achieve those goals. The
athlete must be able to dream that they will be a champion, but
more importantly they must have some plan and drive to reach that
difficult goal.
Once they have a clearly defined goal path, I will work with them
on being mentally tough or hyper focused. Visualization is the
key. Believing and more importantly seeing, that you will be able
to achieve your goal is the key to success. This is what separates
the good athlete from the superstar. Essentially, sports psychology
provides the athlete with that winning mental edge.
